To kick off 2024, NXT held its annual Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic tournament. Baron Corbin, alongside an unlikely partner in Bron Breakker, entered the tournament. Baron Corbin and Bron Breakker defeated Gallus, in the first round, and Axiom/Nathan Frazier in the semi-finals to make it to the finals at Vengeance Day.
Vengeance Day took place on Sunday, February 4th and it featured a ton of incredible action and moments. The show kicked off with Corbin and Breakker meeting Carmelo Hayes and Trick Williams in the finals of the tournament. After Hayes saves Williams, he eats a spear by Breakker. This allows Breakker to pin Hayes and pick up the win, and the trophy for him and Corbin.
Were Baron Corbin and Bron Breakker the correct choice to win the Dusty Classic?
So, when the dust settled in the tournament there was only one team left standing. While unlikely partners, Breakker and Corbin got the job done and went through some of the best that NXT had to offer to hoist the trophy high at Vengeance Day. This left many fans wondering if this was the correct call, or should another team have earned the right to call themselves the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic winners.
Personally, this was 100% the right choice. Baron Corbin and Bron Breakker have been on an absolute tear on NXT recently. Since returning to NXT after the 2023 WWE Draft, Corbin has done arguably his best work yet. From Carmelo Hayes to Bron Breakker himself, to Ilja Dragunov, Corbin has had some absolute wars with some of the best names that NXT has to offer.
Corbin completely reinvented himself on the NXT brand, and it’s been a sight to see. Corbin brought back a similar gimmick of his first time in NXT. This one sees him riding on a motorcycle at all the premium live events, and looking more dominant than ever before. A trip back to NXT more than did its job for Corbin, and he’s arguably better than he’s ever been because of it.
Bron Breakker continues to look like an absolute stud himself. Still early in his career, all Breakker knows is NXT. Despite a couple of matches on the main roster, Breakker has spent the majority of the early going of his WWE career on the NXT brand. Breakker is already a former two-time NXT Champion and can now add the accolade of Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic winner to his resume.
Last weekend, Breakker competed in the Royal Rumble match taking the spot of someone who was no longer booked in place of recent events. Breakker was booked to look incredible in that spot. He eliminated four men (Jimmy Uso, Finn Balor, Ivar, and Omos) before being thrown out by “Dirty” Dominik Mysterio.
Breakker also possesses arguably the best spear in the game. The former football player hits harder than just about anyone else on the roster, and if you have not seen him in action by now, you’re missing out. This win on Sunday truly cemented the newfound friendship of Corbin and Breakker.
Corbin and Breakker now go on to join the likes of the Authors of Pain, The Creed Brothers, Samoa Joe and Finn Balor, and many other tag teams in winning the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic tournament. Corbin and Breakker were the right choices to win the whole thing, and going forward, hopefully, they will continue to be booked as the big deals that they truly are.
