After all, Ace Steel’s return to AEW was not a one-time occurrence.
Steel left AEW after his involvement in a backstage brawl at AEW All Out with CM Punk, Kenny Omega, and The Young Bucks. During the fight, Steel allegedly threw a chair and bit Omega. Steel assumed he would not be let go by the company before learning of the decision.
As PWMania.com previously reported, plans to include CM Punk in promotional materials for AEW Collision’s Wednesday launch ahead of the show’s June 17 premiere were scrapped. The two sides are at odds over a misunderstanding regarding Steel’s return, as Punk believed Steel could work backstage at events while AEW believed Steel would work remotely.
According to Nick Hausman of Haus of Wrestling, AEW re-hired Steel “several months ago” but he has not been actively working backstage at shows.
Steel was rehired with the understanding that he would collaborate on creative with AEW President Tony Khan in some capacity. He was supposed to work remotely because he might irritate some talent if he was backstage at shows.
There was an understanding that once AEW Collision began, he could return to the road as an agent for the brand, but on Tuesday, the decision was made not to bring him back to the road, which Punk quickly discovered.
Due to a misunderstanding between lawyers, Punk was removed from the announcement. It was added that Punk “sounds like he is motivated and wants to help the company’s growth however he can.” His relationship with Khan appears to be on “solid ground,” with no issues between them and open communication.
