As WrestleMania season approaches, speculation intensifies about who will join the ranks of the WWE Hall of Fame. Recently, longtime WWE referee Mike Chioda voiced his strong support for a name that often flies under the radar: Tony Chimel.
On the latest episode of the Monday Mailbag podcast, Chioda enthusiastically endorsed Chimel for the Hall of Fame, citing his nearly four decades of dedication to WWE. “I’ve always said that I’d like to be the one to induct Tony Chimel,” Chioda said, underscoring Chimel’s extensive contributions as a ring announcer and ring crew member.
Chimel spent an extraordinary 38 years with WWE, a tenure that Chioda called “amazing.” He explained, “He announced for many years, working tirelessly as part of the ring crew for an incredible 38 years. I thought my 35 years were a long time, but Chimel’s 38 are just amazing. He did so much for the company, in so many ways.”
While Chimel may not have the same public recognition as in-ring performers, Chioda emphasized his invaluable role in WWE’s production and presentation. “He should be recognized among the great ring announcers,” Chioda said, placing Chimel alongside industry legends like his mentor, Howard Finkel. “His mentor was the legendary Howard Finkel, whom we all loved.”
Despite leaving WWE, Chimel has remained active in the wrestling industry. Alongside his new career at Trader Joe’s, he contributes part-time to All Elite Wrestling’s production crew, staying connected to the world of sports entertainment.
Chioda’s heartfelt endorsement highlights Chimel’s enduring impact on WWE, making a compelling case for his induction into the Hall of Fame and recognition among wrestling’s most iconic voices.
