Mark Henry Recalls Text Message He Received From AJ Styles Following Fake Retirement Angle

WWE Hall of Famer Mark Henry, joined David and Kaz on The Ringer Wrestling Show. The interview was conducted last week ahead of the documentary about Henry’s life and career, which aired on A&E on Sunday night.

Henry discussed his recruiting efforts over the past year, as well as current wrestling, including AJ Styles’ fake retirement angle on SmackDown a few weeks ago. The angle was inspired by Henry’s angle with John Cena on Raw more than a decade ago.

Henry was asked if Styles contacted him ahead of time. Henry replied, “No. I loved it though. I loved it. You talk about paying homage to somebody. Like man. Him and Cody both. It took a couple of days and then AJ texted me and said, ‘I hope I made you proud.’ It almost brought a tear to my eye because for somebody to respect you so much to wanna do good by you and they wanna shine the light on somebody that influenced them, come on man it don’t get much better than that. I felt very honored that he did that. He didn’t have to text me. I knew it was intentional when I saw the jacket I was like (laughs), is this dude wearing pastel? Oh my, let me see how this is gonna go. He did everything but bring the boots out and put the boots down. It was awesome. Frame for frame. You can tell he watched it over a couple times…it was awesome man, I loved it.”

During the interview, Henry also discussed his mother’s passing, the Hall of Pain, his son’s goals, and other topics.
