According to Mean Green Sports, former WCCW announcer and sportscaster Bill Mercer passed away last Saturday at the age of 99. There is no word yet on what led to Mercer’s passing, but updates will be provided once it becomes available.
Mercer began his career as a news reporter in Dallas, Texas, covering the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in the field. He eventually moved to sportscasting and did play-by-play for minor league baseball and, later, major league baseball.
Mercer worked with WCCW as their play-by-play man from the early to late 1980s and was involved with wrestling before that. In the 1950s, he was a wrestling announcer in Oklahoma as part of his broadcasting sports for the local radio station in Muskogee.
On behalf of PWMania.com, we send our condolences to the family, friends, and fans of Bill Mercer.
