Recent developments have sparked debate in the professional wrestling scene, as All Elite Wrestling (AEW) has pulled emerging talent Ricky Starks from his scheduled appearances with Game Changer Wrestling (GCW). Starks, who made a surprising debut at GCW’s “Dream On” event on November 23rd, appeared to be preparing for a high-profile match with Matt Cardona. However, GCW later declared that Starks will no longer be involved in their planned events.
Speculation developed about the circumstances of AEW’s choice. Reports surfaced indicating a possible link to statements made by GCW celebrity Effy on his podcast, in which he criticized AEW President Tony Khan’s booking of Hammerstein Ballroom in close proximity to GCW’s own event at the venue. Effy’s words, which some perceived as a reference to Khan’s family fortune, apparently spurred AEW to respond.
Effy has finally addressed the topic on The Game Changer Weekly podcast, denying culpability for Starks’ suspension from GCW while accepting the potential consequences of his comments. He stated his support for Starks’ career, stating that the issue is entirely between Starks and AEW. Effy further pointed out Starks’ significant absence from AEW programming while being under contract with the firm.
Effy also addressed Starks’ recent interview with Chris Van Vliet, in which he voiced unhappiness with his limited AEW television time. Effy claimed that AEW’s subsequent publication of Starks’ contract extension, which now runs until spring 2025, was an intentional response to these comments. He claimed that he is being used as a scapegoat to draw attention away from AEW’s handling of Starks’ career.
Effy stood by his original words, recognizing the potential consequences of his outspoken personality in the independent wrestling scene. He learned that by remaining independent, he may be viewed as a provocateur without fear of sanctions from larger wrestling firms.
He said, “It’s all the timing of that happening at the exact same time and then using me as a blame, you know, go ahead, buddy. You can blame me. I can handle the blame. I can take the heat.”
Effy continued, “I’m not someone who’s going to go back on what I say. I said what I said and I don’t think I said anything crazy. I just think there’s certain triggers that people have, that you have to be mindful of, especially if you’re in business with them. “
He also stated that he does not believe this is an Effy problem.
It is worth noting that Starks can accept independent dates from other companies.
