Bryan Danielson: “I’m Not Gonna Be a Full-Time Wrestler for Much Longer”

Bryan Danielson left WWE in April 2021 after declining to renew his contract. He signed with AEW after taking a few months off and made his AEW TV debut at the All Out event.

Danielson returned to the ring in 2018 after retiring due to a history of concussions. However, Danielson wants to take his wrestling career more slowly.

Danielson revealed on One Fall with Ron Funches that his full-time career would end when his AEW contract expired. Wrestlers are typically signed to three-year contracts with AEW.

“No [I don’t have a dream scenario for my final match]… I would like to wrestle a match two weeks before I die, right? And to not know that it’s my last match. That would kind of be my ideal situation but I’m not gonna be a full-time wrestler for much longer [Danielson laughed]. That all said, I’m not gonna be a full-time wrestler for much longer. When my AEW contract is up, that’s pretty much me being done being a full-time wrestler but I like the way some people like Terry Funk and Jerry Lawler and those kind of guys do it where they do it for fun, right?”

Danielson mentioned that they don’t do it all the time, so as long as he’s having fun, he’ll wrestle for the rest of his life. He wishes that his passion did not cause him physical discomfort.

Danielson recalled how he had no idea his final match before being forced to retire would be his final match. He said it’s a beautiful thing for him to wrestle every time, but he feels the same way when he gets to spend time with his children.

“I don’t have any vision of what I want my last match to be. I certainly don’t envision it being some epic match that everybody talks about. In my mind, it would be a match that I would just be doing at some local indie in front of 300 people that are just like, okay, I’m just going out and having some fun and it just turns out to be my last match [he laughed]. So that’s kind of how I envision it.”

This past weekend, at AEW Full Gear, Danielson was involved in a fatal 4-way match against ROH World Heavyweight Champion Chris Jericho. The match also featured Claudio Castagnoli and Sammy Guevara.
