Prior to tonight’s NXT Heatwave special on the USA Network, WWE held two house shows for the NXT brand in Florida over the weekend in Tampa and Citrus Springs.
Williams scored a big upset win over top NXT star Bron Breakker with a roll-up on Saturday night’s show in Tampa. This comes at a time when WWE has been promoting Williams as a singles star since he split from NXT Champion Carmelo Hayes on television a few weeks ago.
Williams will face Ilja Dragunov on tonight’s NXT Heatwave special on the USA Network.
Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez discussed the big win and the noticeable push Williams has been getting on Wrestling Observer Radio.
Meltzer: “They’re [WWE] giving Trick a pretty big push. He beat Bron Breakker at one of the house shows this weekend.”
Bryan Alvarez: “Really? They had Trick Williams beat Bron Breakker?”
Meltzer: “Yeah, they were in Tampa and Citrus Springs. I think it was in Tampa. Teah, impromptu challenge, and he beat him. For what they want, Trick Williams has a great deal of potential. He’s a great talker, he has a look, and the only thing is he’s not a great wrestler, but an athlete. I think the hope is that they’re not rushing him up in time, which is a good thing. If they brought him up right now, he’d be one of those guys who’d get a stigma of failure on him, so they’re not rushing him up.”
