Regarding Sting’s departure from WWE, Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer is reporting that Sting had wanted to a do a cinematic match with The Undertaker but it never appealed to Vince McMahon.
The belief is that WWE had “no interest” in using Sting as a television character while Tony Khan was looking to sign Sting and use him regularly.
Meltzer noted that AEW is “trying to find a way to bring back the lapsed WCW audience.”
