With his TNA Wrestling contract expiring on Friday, Josh Alexander is officially a free agent, and reports indicate that AEW is likely his next destination.
According to Fightful Select’s Sean Ross Sapp, insiders within AEW and the wrestling industry expect Alexander to sign with AEW—if he hasn’t already. While WWE showed interest in signing him last year, PWInsider previously reported that Alexander is represented by top wrestling agent Barry Bloom, who also represents stars like Kenny Omega and Jim Ross, to handle his contract negotiations.
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer provided insight into Alexander’s mindset during his free agency decision:
“Well, you know, I mean, his TNA contract is up, and obviously, he was going to go to AEW or WWE, and it looks like AEW. But I do know two things. Number one, he has decided where he was going, and number two, it was to whoever the highest bidder was for him. So, the story is that it’s AEW, but I know those were the two key decision points. Providing the best for his family was key. And, you know, somebody offered a better deal than the other, and that’s the one he took.”
Meltzer emphasized that Alexander’s priority was providing for his family and securing the most lucrative offer, adding that age and personal responsibilities factored heavily into his decision:
“He made the right decision for him at this stage of his life. And it’s not a decision over who he thought was… I mean, it may be who he thought was a better fit for his matches as well, maybe, but the key to the decision, in this case, was the family and going to the, you know, essentially, the highest bidder. So that was what happened. But both sides were interested.”
While the move to AEW is strongly rumored, Meltzer clarified that the final decision was not solely based on wrestling fit but rather a combination of financial security and family well-being, with both AEW and WWE showing strong interest.
Stay tuned for an official announcement, as Alexander’s expected debut in AEW could come sooner rather than later.
