Cody Rhodes made it clear that he wanted to win the WWE Championship after making his return to the company at WrestleMania 38 last year.
After making a successful comeback from injury and entering the men’s Royal Rumble match in position 30, Rhodes had his chance to challenge Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Title.
Many people thought he would end Reigns’ dominant reign. The match served as the main event of the second night of WrestleMania, with WWE gradually building up to it. Reigns retained the Championship after Solo Sikoa hit Rhodes with a Samoan Spike and interference from The Usos. Many fans were shocked by how the match ended.
According to Dave Meltzer’s report in the most recent Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Reigns was supposed always to win the championship.
Meltzer stated, “Reigns winning was always the plan, although it was kept secret and almost nobody knew.”
Given that Brock Lesnar turned heel and attacked Rhodes on Monday Night Raw, WWE is temporarily putting an end to the feud between Reigns and Rhodes. Click here for more on WWE’s plans for Rhodes and Lesnar.
