Chris Jericho made a surprise appearance at GCW Highest In The Room 3 on Saturday night, creating a buzz as he escalated his feud with Matt Cardona while also taking aim at EFFY.
During the match between Cardona and EFFY, a hooded figure entered the ring and attacked Cardona with a baseball bat. This allowed EFFY to pin Cardona for the win. However, the mystery attacker then turned on EFFY, revealing himself to be Jericho, who was sporting an AEW shirt.
EFFY had been filling in for Ricky Starks, who AEW pulled from the match due to controversial comments EFFY had made about AEW President Tony Khan and his father, Shad Khan.
The segment served to build the storyline between Jericho and Cardona ahead of their upcoming clash for the ROH World Heavyweight Title at Final Battle. Dave Meltzer provided additional context in his Wrestling Observer Daily Update, explaining that the appearance was a spontaneous decision:
“The Chris Jericho deal last night at the GCW show in Los Angeles was not a detailed thing. Basically Jericho was in Los Angeles last night already for Kuarantine at the Whisky and GCW was there and Jericho figured he could shoot an angle with Matt Cardona. GCW wasn’t going to have any problem with a surprise appearance of Jericho on their show and laying out Effy just made sense for all concerned.”
Jericho’s unexpected involvement added excitement to the event and heightened anticipation for his upcoming match with Cardona, further blurring the lines between AEW, ROH, and independent promotions like GCW.
