Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has scored another massive success with Disney’s Moana 2, which was released in the United States on November 27, 2024. The animated sequel has dominated the box office, crossing the $1 billion mark, and has continued to be a major hit on streaming platforms.
Directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller, and produced by Christina Chen and Yvett Merino, Moana 2 features returning stars Auli‘i Cravalho as Moana and The Rock as Maui, alongside Rachel House (Tala), Temuera Morrison (Chief Tui), Nicole Scherzinger (Sina), Hualālai Chung, David Fane, and Rose Matafeo as Moni, Kele, and Loto.
According to Variety, the film became Disney+’s third-largest animated theatrical premiere of all time within just five days of its streaming debut, drawing an impressive 27.3 million views. It also ranks as Walt Disney Animation’s biggest streaming launch since Encanto, which has amassed 1.4 billion hours streamed since its release.
Following the success of Moana 2, The Rock is also leading a live-action adaptation of Moana, set for release in July 2026. Both projects build on the legacy of the original Moana (2016), which was a critical and commercial triumph.
