It’s time to bring back tradition, as WWE is closing the year with Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 14th from the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, NY. The event will air nationwide on NBC and stream on Peacock at 8 pm EST/5 pm PST.
The NBC flagship show originally started and ran from 1985-1992 and was revived for the first time from 2006-2008. WWE is now staging its second revival.
The massive card has taken shape and features big stars and multiple high-stakes championship matches.
Let’s examine the matches on the card and predict who will emerge victorious. I am trying to redeem myself after my mediocre 3-2 record at the WWE Survivor Series.
Sami Zayn vs. Drew McIntyre
This match came together quickly, as Drew McIntyre made his return and presence felt on Monday Night Raw by taking out Jey Uso first and Sami Zayn at the end of the night after his match with Seth Rollins.
I would love to see Jey Uso come down and help Sami here. It could be revenge for Drew taking him out. What makes it more interesting is that McIntyre took out Jimmy Uso at this Friday’s Smackdown! However, I don’t see WWE going in that direction.
It’s clear that Zayn is a fan favorite, and a loss will not hurt his star power. This match is Drew’s first match since returning, and WWE will indeed not have him lose.
Whether this will be a one-off match or a continued feud remains to be seen. But I see Drew McIntyre winning against an always courageous Sami Zayn.
Pick: Drew McIntyre defeats Sami Zayn.
WWE Women’s United States Championship Finals Match: Chelsea Green vs. Michin
While you can make a case for anyone of the four remaining women that were in the tournament going into Smackdown Friday night, for me, whoever won the Bayley vs. Chelsea Green was going to win this match.
The WWE Universe loves Chelsea Green, and she has put in the work. Not to say Michin hasn’t, but Green winning the championship would be great for her and her character.
Michin is a star, and there’s no doubt about it, but tonight, it will be about Chelsea Green. That is who I see winning this match.
Pick: Chelsea Green defeats Michin to become the Inaugural Women’s United States Champion.
WWE Women’s World Championship Match: Liv Morgan (c) vs. Iyo Sky
I love Iyo Sky in the title picture. The WWE is high on her, and they have a good reason! While she would be a good choice to dethrone Morgan here, I don’t see that happening. Morgan will win, especially since Sky has been getting the better of her lately.
We will get a familiar story here, with Dominick Mysterio and Raquel Rodriguez coming down to help Morgan steal another victory. Again, you can ask about Tiffany Stratton cashing in her MITB contract, but I still feel her cash-in will eventually go against Nia Jax for a bigger pop!
Pick: Liv Morgan retains her championship against Iyo Sky.
WWE World Heavyweight Championship Triple Threat Match: Gunther (c) vs. Finn Balor vs. Damian Priest
This match is intriguing, as a triple threat match can always be an out for a champion to lose without getting pinned. There was talk about the WWE giving Finn Balor a significant push. Looking at the past few weeks on Raw, that looks to be already starting.
The main question I have is whether a Goldberg retirement match will happen. And if it is against Gunther, when will the ball start rolling on that?
Gunther vs. Goldberg does not have to be for a title. And if that is the direction WWE is taking, they might take the belt off Gunther, whether here or at the Rumble.
I feel Priest could benefit from another title run, and since this is a triple-threat match, it could happen here. WWE will eventually give Balor the World Heavyweight Title, but it feels too soon! If Priest can pin Balor and wins this match, they can continue this feud with the WWE World Heavyweight Championship
An indirect loss here would free up Gunther for Goldberg. And if Goldberg doesn’t show here, it could be at the Royal Rumble.
Pick: Damien Priest defeats Finn Balor and Gunther to become the new WWE World Heavyweight Champion
Undisputed WWE Championship Match: Cody Rhodes (c) vs. Kevin Owens
It would be nice to see Owens pick up the win and the title here to shake things up. If that were to happen, the feud would be tied at one apiece, setting up a rubber match.
I have nothing against the Babyface Champion, Cody Rhodes, but how many times can you book someone in a title match and have them lose? Owens always seems to be in the title picture and matches, but he can never quite win it!
It’s been 7 years since Owens held a singles title in the WWE. Owens is one of those characters in wrestling where he doesn’t necessarily need a title to be relevant, but how many times will you watch the same ending to the same movie before you get tired of it?
I think Kevin Owens is in that same situation here. I can’t see Cody Rhodes’ title reign ending here; The odds are that Rhodes will hold the WWE Undisputed Championship until at least Wrestlemania.
The only salvageable outcome for Owens would be to lose this match, not by pinfall but by DQ. While I can see Owens becoming enraged when he cannot beat Rhodes and gets disqualified, I don’t think that’s how they will end the main event. Cody Rhodes will come out on top with another successful title defense.
Pick: Cody Rhodes defeats Kevin Owens to retain his championship.
