Backstage News On AEW Dynamite Match Being A Late Addition To The Show

Rey Fenix defeated Jeff Jarrett in the opening match of this week’s AEW Dynamite to retain the International Title. There was some concern during the fight as Fenix appeared to be hurt, but he is reportedly fine and has been booked in a match on next week’s Dynamite, where he will defend his title against Nick Jackson.

As PWMania.com previously reported, Fenix wasn’t cleared medically until late in the afternoon, and Jackson didn’t dress in his usual wrestling gear for his match against Brian Cage and Claudio Castagnoli because he wasn’t expecting to wrestle on Dynamite.

Fenix’s injury scare came just a week after Jon Moxley suffered a concussion while catching Fenix during their match.

Dave Meltzer reported in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Fenix was injured in a cannonball spot and hurt his back in the Moxley match.

Meltzer stated, “At first he wasn’t cleared so Fenix vs. Jeff Jarrett wasn’t scheduled. But after doing physical therapy and an in-ring workout, Dr. Michael Sampson cleared him shortly before the show started so that changed the show as well. The Nick Jackson vs. Brian Cage vs. Claudio Castagnoli match for a shot at Fenix was added about 90 minutes before the show started.”

Nick was supposed to be ringside for Matt Jackson’s singles match, but AEW President Tony Khan asked him to wrestle that night instead. Nick had enough ring gear to go around in makeshift gear.
