WWE NXT Review – August 1, 2023
Kicking off this week’s NXT with a recap of The Great American Bash.
We then see new NXT Tag Team Champion The Family pulling up to the Performance Center before Gallus blindsides them and leaves The Family laid out.
Vic Joseph & Booker T then greet audiences at home before Jacy Jayne grabs a headset and says she’s going to finish what she started on Sunday with Lyra Valkyria.
Lyra Valkyria vs. Jacy Jayne
Jacy Jayne blindsides Lyra Valkyria on the ramp and delivers a blockbuster off the apron then she dumps Valkyria inside the ring, and the bell sounds & Jayne sends Valkyria crashing into the corner then fires off stomps.
Valkyria fires back with a crossbody but Jayne lands a snapmare and a pair of kicks.
She rams her shoulder into Valkyria’s midsection before Valkyria delivers a dropkick before the action then spills to the outside and Valkyria delivers a tope suicida as we go to a break.
After the break Valkyria delivers a boot to Jayne and follows it up with a back elbow. Jayne lands one of her own then delivers a senton then Valkyria delivers a pair of kicks and sends Jayne crashing out of the ring then delivers a dropkick through the middle rope and gets her back in.
She ascends to the top and delivers a crossbody then hits a northern lights suplex and goes for a pin but Jayne kicks out and Valkyria delivers a series of kicks before looking for an enziguri. Jayne ducks out of the way and hits a spinebuster then follows it up with a superkick.
Valkyria delivers a spinning back heel kick then ascends to the top rope and hits a splash for the win.
Winner: Lyra Valkyria
We then head backstage to NXT Champion Carmelo Hayes & Trick Williams talking about Hayes’ defense against Ilja Dragunov at The Great American Bash. Williams says he meant what he said last week when he said he has to do this for him. Hayes voices his support and Williams explains that the NXT Universe sees him as a sidekick. He says he isn’t the NXT Champion and he has to show Dragunov what he’s made of. Hayes says he respects that and Williams says while it isn’t a breakup it’s time for him to be his own man then they hug.
After the break we see NXT Tag Team Champions The Family being checked on. McKenzie Mitchell asks for an update on their condition, and D’Angelo makes it clear that he wants to face Gallus. Stacks points out that there’s only 2 of them and D’Angelo says he’ll make a call.
Women’s World Champion Rhea Ripley introduces Dominik Mysterio as still the North American Champion and says he proved that he’s more of a man than Wes Lee, Mustafa Ali and everyone in the audience. Mysterio calls himself the greatest Luchador of all time but before he can continue Dragon Lee’s music hits and he makes his way down to the ring.
Lee says he won’t let Mysterio disrespect the NXT Universe or his heritage any longer. Ripley calls Dragon Rey Mysterio Jr. Jr. and Dragon says he doesn’t like her. He then questions Mysterio’s statement about being the greatest Luchador of all time and says no one believes that because that honor belongs to his father. Mysterio says he made the Mysterio name relevant and Lee says the only reason he is still North American Champion is because of Ripley. He then challenges Mysterio to a North American Title match next week as a means to prove himself and Mysterio accepts. Ripley makes it clear she’ll be at ringside and Lee says he won’t be alone either. Rey Mysterio then appears on the Titan Tron and says he’s proud to say he’ll be on NXT next week in the corner of someone he truly respects.
We then head backstage to Carmelo Hayes as an angered Wes Lee appears and Hayes asks what’s the matter. Lee tells Hayes he has no idea what he’s going through and Hayes tells him that he understands the pressure and the anger then Meta 4’s Noam Dar & Oro Mensah walk in and Dar gloats about being the so called Heritage Cup Champion. Wes informs him that he isn’t actually the Heritage Cup Champion and Dar says he never lost the Heritage Cup Title before he brings up his 2 recent losses to Mysterio. Lee has heard enough and unleashes on Dar & Mensah.
We go backstage where Chase U were interviewed before Baron Corbin interrupted. Corbin told Thea Hail that not everyone has it for this business but Andre Chase called Corbin an asshole before challenging him to a match later in the night.
Eddy Thorpe vs. Dijak
Dijak looks for a big boot but Eddy Thorpe ducks out of the way and delivers a dropkick then fires off right hands and delivers a snapmare. Dijak looks for a chokeslam but Thorpe fights his way out and delivers a series of shoulders to Dijak’s midsection.
Dijak sends Thorpe crashing into the ring post shoulder first then delivers a sit out chokeslam then he goes for a pin but Thorpe kicks out.
Thorpe delivers a kick to Dijak’s midsection then lands a running boot and a suplex. Dijak sends Thorpe into the ring post shoulder first once more and gets him up on his shoulders.
Thorpe quickly escapes and delivers his signature jumping elbow but Dijak rolls out of the ring before he can be pinned then delivers a kick to his jaw and follows it up with a boot for the win.
Winner: Dijak
NXT Tag Team Champions The Family were backstage with Tony D’Angelo revealing that they had their partner for tonight
We go backstage where Dana Brooke is with Kelani Jordan where Brooke told Jordan that she needed to find a killer instinct.
Tag Team Match
Valentina Feroz & Yulisa Leon vs. Elektra Lopez & Lola Vice
Yulisa Leon & Elektra Lopez lock up to get this match started then Leon executes a mat return and a pair of arm drags then tags in Valentina Feroz & Feroz goes flying with an assist from Leon but Lopez clocks her after Lola Vice distracts her. Vice then becomes legal and delivers a kick to Feroz’s midsection and lands a hip attack.
Lopez tags in and delivers a back elbow then follows it up with a kick then Feroz manages to deliver an enziguri and looks to tag in Leon. Vice tags in and tries to prevent her from doing so but Leon tags in and delivers a pair of suplexes to Vice.
She follows it up with a Falcon Arrow and goes for a pin but Lopez breaks the fall. Feroz tries to level her but Lopez overpowers her so Leon dumps her to the outside then Vice hits a roundhouse kick for the win.
Winners: Elektra Lopez & Lola Vice
Women’s Champion Tiffany Stratton had a Tik Tok where she revealed that she would return next week.
Tag Team Match
NXT Champion Carmelo Hayes & Wes Lee vs. Meta 4 (Noam Dar & Oro Mensah)
Wes Lee wastes no time and attacks Meta 4 on the outside before they eventually overpower him but Hayes levels them both. Lee then sends Noam Dar’s head bouncing off the ring apron as Hayes brawls with Oro Mensah then Lee sends Dar crashing into the apron spine first and dumps him inside the ring as Hayes slides in.
The bell rings and Hayes uses the ropes to deliver a suplex. He ascends to the top and goes flying then delivers an arm drag and a dropkick as Lee calls to be tag in but Hayes opts not to do so Dar tags in Mensah and Hayes catches him with a crossbody off the ropes.
Lee tags in and wears Mensah down before Hayes tags back in and delivers a kick to his chest. Lee tags back in and delivers an uppercut then fires off right hands on Mensah’s midsection.
Mensah delivers a right hand across his spine but Hayes tags in and delivers a double dropkick with Lee. Lee then tags back in and ascends to the top but before he can do flying Lash Legend & Jakara Jackson pulls Mensah out of the ring as we go to a break.
After the break Dar delivers a right hand to Lee’s spine and tags in Mensah. Mensah holds Wes in place as Dar delivers a kick to his chest then delivers a suplex then Hayes & Dar tag in and Hayes delivers a back elbow.
He then delivers an atomic drop and a superkick then goes for a pin but Dar kicks out so Hayes delivers a right hand to Dar’s face then plants him and tags in Lee.
Lee ascends to the top rope but Jakara Jackson slides in the ring and inserts herself between Dar & Lee. Lee still decides to fly and Jackson ducks out of the way then he goes for a pin but Mensah breaks the fall.
Lee delivers a kick to Dar’s head and looks for the Kardiak Kick but Dar ducks out of the way and Lee accidentally hits Hayes & this allows Mensah to deliver a kick to Lee while the referee is distracted and for Dar to follow it up with an enziguri for the win.
Winners: Meta 4
Bron Breakker cuts a promo calling out Von Wagner. Breakker calls Wagner a nobody before promising that he would leave Wagner worse than his head scar from childhood
Axiom confronts Dominik Mysterio & Rhea Ripley in the parking lot but was cut off by Mustafa Ali. Ali tried to get a rematch out of Mysterio but Axiom kept interrupting him. Axiom told Ali that he felt disrespected but Ali responded by telling Axiom to try and be disrespected for 6 years.
Baron Corbin vs. Andre Chase
Match starts off with a lock up then Baron Corbin delivers a clothesline and a knee to Andre Chase’s midsection but Chase manages to roll him up but Corbin kicks out and Chase delivers a sunset flip then he sends Corbin crashing to the outside but Corbin plants him and tosses him back in the ring.
He delivers a series of elbows to Chase’s ribs then whips him into the corner and dumps him out of the ring then he sends Chase into the barricade spine first and dumps him back inside the ring.
Chase delivers a few kicks and chops then executes a Russian leg sweeps and follows it up with the Chase U Stomps before he ascends to the top rope and looks to go flying but Corbin avoids it and plants him with a spinebuster.
He locks in a single leg Boston Crab and Hail throws the towel into the ring but Corbin catches it and Thea Hail storms off. Duke Hudson tries stopping her but is unsuccessful so Chase tries taking advantage and rolls up Corbin but Corbin kicks out and delivers End Of Days for the win.
Winner: Baron Corbin
There was a video vignette of Roxanne Perez’s days back in Texas and her win against Blair Davenport at The Great American Bash.
We go backstage where Meta 4 is celebrated before Tyler Bate interrupted the proceedings. Bate challenged Dar to a match next week which Dar accidentally accepted.
Joe Gacy says it’s not uncommon to have issues with new members but insubordination is toxic to the roots of the Schism tree and must be eradicated. The Dyad speak to the two saboteurs as if they are Creed Brothers in disguise and Ava says 2 of the masks put their hands on The Dyad which is unacceptable. She asks each person to step forward and take their masks and each individual does it 1 by 1 including Ikemen Jiro until there are 2 left. The Dyad attack the 2 remaining members thinking they are Creed Brothers and unmask them only to find out they aren’t the Creed Brothers.
Creed Brothers then pop up on the Titan Tron and laugh at The Dyad for thinking the 2 individuals were them. Julius Creed says they lost the Loser Leaves NXT match and tells them all about the adventures himself and Brutus have been on. He makes it clear that they aren’t in Orlando and thank The Schism for giving them some vacation time.
The Dyad then look to attack the two individuals but Gacy stops them and tells Creed Brothers he knows they’re nearby. He tells Schism members across the world to bring Creed Brothers to him.
Cora Jade complained to the women’s locker room backstage after her loss against Dana Brooke & this rant led to Jade taking her stuff and stating that she was leaving NXT.
6 Man Tag Team Match
NXT Tag Team Champions The Family (Tony D’Angelo & Stacks) & Santos Escobar vs. Gallus (Joe Coffey, Mark Coffey & Wolfgang)
The Family & Santos Escobar waste no time and go straight after Gallus as they dump Gallus out of the ring & Wolfgang slides back inside and the bell rings. Stacks wears him down then tags in Tony D’Angelo & he fires off right hands then tags Stacks back in.
Stacks delivers a chop block and fires off right hands then tags D’Angelo back in. Wolfgang delivers a back elbow then tags in Joe Coffey. Mark Coffey & Wolfgang try to interfere but Escobar & Stacks slide in to neutralize them & they fire off right hands on Gallus as we go to a break.
After the break Wolfgang is wearing down Stacks before Mark tags in and delivers a shoulder tackle off the middle rope then lands a right hand and tags in Joe. Joe delivers a sidewalk slam before Wolfgang tags back in and stomps on Stacks’ neck.
Mark tags back in and Stacks lands a back body drop. D’Angelo looks to tag in but Joe pulls him off the apron. Wolfgang then tags in and delivers a bodyslam then follows it up with a bodyslam. Stacks rolls out of the way and tags in Escobar.
Mark tags in and Escobar catches him with a pair of flying shoulder tackles then he follows it up with an enziguri and ascends to the top rope & hits a crossbody.
Both teams go at it in the center of the ring before Joe & Wolfgang are tossed out of the ring. Escobar delivers an enziguri to Mark then ascends to the top with Mark in hand and delivers a hurricanrana.
He delivers the double running knees then tags in Stacks then D’Angelo tags in and The Family delivers Bada Bing Bada Boom for the win.
Winners: NXT Tag Team Champions The Family & Santos Escobar
After the match The Family hugs Escobar and shakes hands with him.
We then head to a video from Ilja Dragunov & he has a special message for Trick Williams. He says his retribution begins next week and he will not stop until Williams is fully terminated.
