Although it was initially reported that WWE was considering having Steve Austin face Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39 this year, the company also considered having Austin face Brock Lesnar.

According to reports, Austin was offered an “enormous” sum of money to compete against Roman Reigns. All of this comes after Austin came out of retirement last year for a match with Kevin Owens at WrestleMania 38.

Dave Meltzer reported in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Reigns vs. Austin was a match pitched just a few weeks ago. Meltzer was told that the main idea for Austin at WrestleMania was to do a match with Lesnar in the hopes of having two significant main events for the two-night show, Austin vs. Lesnar and Reigns vs. The Rock.

Austin vs. Lesnar has fallen through and The Rock has indicated that he won’t have enough time to get into ring shape for the match.

“WWE had also talked of getting Austin for another match at SummerSlam last year, and the attempt for this year for Mania was to get him with Lesnar, with the idea of it being a first-time ever dream match,” Meltzer wrote.

Austin is still expected to wrestle at WrestleMania in April.
