Everyone loves a comeback but can there be a greater setting in which to make a sporting return than the WWE? The organisation is all about entertainment and that provides a perfect stage for a returning hero (or villain) to come back to their fans after they’d been written off.
A number of big names have already been mentioned in connection with a dramatic wrestling comeback in 2021 so let’s round up those grapplers and assess the true chances of their returns.
Ronda Rousey
Ronda Rousey has been away from the WWE scene for so long that most sports fans don’t even know that she even had a career beyond MMA. In fact, she’s enjoyed a glittering, multi-dimensional career that includes an Olympic judo medal and she’s the only woman to have won a championship in UFC and WWE.
Rousey has teased at a comeback into pro wrestling for some time and, back in September 2020, she hinted at the desire for a rematch against Natalya. She’s just turned 34 and many feel that she is reaching her peak as a fighter in any discipline. There is, therefore, plenty of time left for a return to the wrestling ring and we think this is one of the more likely comebacks.
Chances of a comeback: 8/10
Tyson Fury
It’s fair to say that Tyson Fury has other things on his mind besides WWE at the moment. Having made a dramatic return to the boxing ring in 2018, 2021 is set to bring a long awaited world heavyweight title bout against fellow British fighter Anthony Joshua.
Fury has already made his entrance into the WWE and has hinted that he would have continued his wrestling career had world events not conspired against him in 2020. In 2019, he began in dramatic fashion by knocking out Braun Strowman.
For now, the man known as the Gypsy King has Joshua in his sights and he’s the odds on favourite to retain his heavyweight titles. According to those outlets supplied via asiabet.org, the Fury v Joshua betting markets show Tyson Fury as a general 4/7 pick. Joshua is available at 7/5 while the draw concludes matters at 22/1.
17th July is the proposed date for the fight and, as the days edge closer, asiabet.org will continue to adjust those numbers. Any important news updates will also be available and there will be opinion articles on boxing in general. Meanwhile, if any readers wish to take their interest a step further, offers and promotions will be listed in regards to registration and beyond.
Conceivably, once the fight is done, Tyson Fury may well want to pick up his relationship with the WWE. Potentially, a November 2021 target could provide enough rest and recuperation time ahead of possible battles with Braun Strowman, Drew McIntyre and the rest.
Chances of a Comeback: 6/10
Hulk Hogan
The legendary Hulk Hogan is now 67 years of age and he last entered the wrestling ring in a professional context back in 2012. Talk of a return has been in place ever since and there’s no let up in 2021.
The Hulk was last involved with WWE back in 2006 but he teased at a return to the organization at the start of this year. Hogan said that fans should learn to expect anything and that even he didn’t know what the future would hold. Speaking ahead of a Monday night RAW showdown, Hulk is quoted as saying:
‘We could end up in the ring, brother. We could end up taking over the whole WWE in one given night.’
Hogan may be keen on a return but any comeback would receive a mixed reaction due to controversy away from the ring. When the Hulk appeared in a video link ahead of Wrestlemania 37, he was soundly booed by the live crowd.
Every show needs a villain but perhaps Hulk Hogan’s recent misdemeanours take this concept a stage too far. His is the least likely comeback of this bunch and we think he should stay out of the ring and protect what’s left of his legacy.
Chances of a comeback: 2/10
